Uta Hagen teaching at HB
A studio for actors
HB is the New York acting studio that Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen founded in 1945. It is the place where she developed the Hagen Technique - an acting technique taught all over the world.
I played many roles at HB, both on stage and off. I started as a student, then became a registrar, then I was teacher, and then I started doing graphic design.
I am happy to say that I have freelanced for them on occasion even years after I left. I have wonderful memories of my time there. I am grateful for the outstanding teachers that have taught me so much about the craft of acting, and the great co-workers I had the pleasure of collaborating with over the years.

Workshops

David Sharp's Workshops
HB's identity was straightforward, with no unnecessary frills.
It took me quite a while to tame my flashy, bull-in-a-china-shop design style. After a digital design firm called Bad Feather was contracted to refine our identity, their guidelines, combined with my on-the-job experience set the stage.
Here is a good example of the right blending of both styles. These posters were put up around the studio, which meant that people could and often would stop to read them.
This endless amount of information, which I would never include on a street poster, needed to be there for our mostly captive audience.

I was back at HB in 2023 and it was so great to see that some of my very first designs were still up on the wall.
